When I think of Cameroon jerseys, I can’t help but be reminded of the sleeveless wreck that Puma bestowed upon the team at the 2002 African Cup of Nations. It looked more like women’s basketball jerseys that soccer kits, and I’m surprised Puma tried to pull something so audacious. I’m all for change, but the company wanted to change the idea of soccer jerseys, not just how Cameroon’s looked.
This summer’s Cameroon top is very African, or at least African in how Americans view it. It’s bright, flamboyant, and has a lion’s head imprinted on the right shoulder. I have to admit that I do like the representation of their nickname, The Indomitable Lions, on the jersey. After all it’s the first World Cup on the continent, and Puma wants to sell jerseys. I’ll give them credit though because the top is simple but really solid.
I’m just glad FIFA banned those sleeveless ones because who knows what would have happened this time around.

The Indomitable Lions.
Actually, there’s really only one indomitable Lion on that team and that’s Samuel Eto’o. He’s in a different class than the rest of the squad, and I think that was proven at the African Cup of Nations. The defense was porous, giving up two goals to Tunisia, and losing to Gabon 1-0. Cameroon progressed to the 2nd round on goal differential, but were quickly dispatched by a superior Egypt team. If that Cameroon team shows up in South Africa, it will be a quick experience for the Indomitable Lions.
Known for some incredible triumphs, Cameroon has had its share of memorable moments on the world stage. Starting at the World Cup in 1990, the Indomitable Lions topped a group consisting of Argentina, Romania, and the USSR. The old man, Roger Mila, scored 2 goals against Columbia in the 2nd round to help Cameroon advance to last eight before bowing out to England. Cameroon was now on radar of the soccer world.
Since that time, the Indomitable Lions have suffered more defeat than achieved success. They hope to change that in South Africa, but it all starts with aforementioned Eto’o. There’s a level of player that is hard to describe or get a real understanding of because he may play on a great team with stars feeding him the ball. Samuel Eto’o is one such player. How great is he? Some have said he’s world class, which I for one was not convinced of. That is until I saw how well he played with Inter Milan after he left Barcelona and how his replacement, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, struggled.
I had the privilege of watching Eto’o play at the Nou Camp during his last year with the Blaugrana. He was impressive in his technique on the ball and dangerous for most of the game. He created chances on his own, without the world-class midfield feeding him the ball. It struck me at the time and wasn’t what I expected. Then, when he moved on to Inter Milan this last year, he helped the team win the Champions League by showing off his work rate and defensive abilities at times. It seems as if he’s become a more well rounded player.
Another player who has made a name for himself this year is defensive midfielder, Alexandre Song. With Arsenal, the hard-nosed Song has been one of the most consistent players on the team this year. He’s become a rock in the center of the field and will be counted on to feed Eto’o the ball. Having him help out the defense is vital to the team’s success, but it may not allow him to get into the attack enough to make a difference at that end of the field. He’ll have a lot of work to do.
Eto’o could reek havoc on defenses, but if Cameroon’s own defense doesn’t sort things out, it could be a really short World Cup for the Indomitable Lions.
