Puma did an awesome job with Algeria’s away kit. I chose to write about the away kit because honestly the home one is pretty plain and the away one is really creative. I love the double red and white stripes with the bright, green background. It sort of looks environmentally friendly, like it should be made of corn or recycled plastic cups. Algeria is known for agriculture, so maybe it is?
With a name like The Desert Foxes, it’s only fitting that this jersey would look sleek and fast. I don’t know if it gives the players confidence per se, but I’m looking forward to seeing them run around the pitch wearing this colorful top. I almost want to buy one because I like it that much. Only problem for Algeria is they face England and the USA in their group, which both should cause several problems for the men in green.
But at least they have faith that they’ll look cool however they perform in South Africa.

The country of Algeria seems as mysterious as the name of its national soccer team. This north African nation was born of a plethora of cultures from France and Spain to the Ottomans (modern day Turkey) and indigenous Algerian Africans (known as the Berbers). Like most nations in Africa, it has been ruled by several non-African countries whose purpose was to set up a stronghold in other parts of the world. The result is an amalgamation of demographics and culture solely its own.
As the history of Algeria unfolded, it became increasingly clear that the nation’s soil was some of the most fertile in this part of the world. Agriculture has boomed in the last half century, and as much as 25% of the country’s workforce is employed in this field. In addition to agriculture, fossil fuels have allowed Algeria to progress economically with a guesstimated 8th largest set of reserves on the planet. With the global environmental movement, and the desire to decrease the use of fossil fuels, Algeria will need to make a major change in exporting to avoid an economic downturn as the country relies so much on its oil reserves to survive.
Algeria didn’t gain its full independence (from France) until 1962, which seemed to stifle the growth of soccer in the country. The national team, The Desert Foxes, have shown almost no consistency in play over the years. Some think it’s partially due to soccer players of Algerian descent, who were born elsewhere, choosing to play for other countries. (Zinadine Zidane being a prime example) Although the team made the 1982 and 1986 World Cups, they were eliminated in the first round, and havn’t made it back since this summer’s tournament in South Africa.
Over the last few years, the national team has come to life with clutch performances when they needed it most. In World Cup 2010 qualification, Algeria won its 2nd round group over Gambia, Senegal, and Liberia to advance. Its 3rd round campaign would be a bit tougher, as the Desert Foxes would again need to win the group to make the World Cup. That group included hated rival Egypt, who weren’t going quietly. Both teams performed well and finished the group tied for 1st place, setting up a monumental playoff, held in neutral Sudan.
With tensions high, and the stadium’s capacity even more inflated, both teams showed tremendous fervor in their efforts to win the most important game of either country’s history. It took a tremendous strike by Algeria’s Antar Yahia right before halftime to book the team’s place in South Africa. Yahia is something of a national hero for not only changing his citizenship to play for Algeria (he was born in France to Algerian parents), but for scoring the vital goal that put his new country into the World Cup for the first time since 1986.
For Algeria to advance to the 2nd round for the first time, it will need more heroics from its national hero.
