There’s a phrase thrown around a lot in sports stating that “defense wins championships.” Baseball follows those guidelines as well with a slight difference. In a lot of other sports, there are trick plays or other ways that a less-talented team can win. In football, there’s the reverse or a play-action pass to fool defenders. In basketball, there are different formations and plays that can be ran to throw off teams. In soccer, there are free kicks and lucky bounces. But in baseball, the teams all line up the same, and the pitcher still has to throw the ball in the strike zone. The difference is execution.
During this past weekend’s series with Texas Tech, the Horns showed more consistent play than they have all year. They blew out the Red Raiders with 22 runs in game one, showing the potency of their offense. After narrowly losing game two, to a determined Red Raider team, the Horns bounced back and won a pitchers duel by one run in game three. But that doesn’t tell the whole story.
Texas, after committing two errors in game one, did not make another one all weekend. That is a sign of a team playing well and doing the things they need to win. Now, if only they can take that consistent play into this weekend’s series with Nebraska.
To this point, the Horns are hitting the ball pretty well and the pitchers have done enough to get by on most occasions, but they have not played top opponents on a regular basis. Now that the Big 12 is in full swing, that will all change. We shall soon see what the team is really made of.
Texas’ toughest series to date comes this weekend, as they take on a very good Nebraska team in a pivotal Big 12 showdown. The Cornhuskers recently swept Northern Colorado, who just handed No. 1 Arizona State its first loss. In addition, Nebraska had a 14-game win streak earlier in the season, and are 17-3-1 overall (5-0-1 Big 12), while ranked in the Top 25 in most polls. Texas will have its work cut out, no doubt about that.
The Huskers have firepower in abundance throughout their lineup. Nebraska has four starters hitting over .349 with a combined 10 home runs between them. In addition, three of the other four starters are hitting over .280 with a combined 34 runs batted in. Nebraska is no pushover with players such as Mitch Abeita, who is hitting .361 with six home runs and Jake Opitz, who has 20 runs batted in already this season.
It’s obvious the Huskers will bring their big bats. The Horns better be prepared play some defense.
After all, it does win championships.

In an earlier column, I wondered how the youngsters were going to react to the adversity and difficulties they would face. My thought process was that the elder statesmen were going to be solid, and the new guys were going to struggle. To my dismay, it has been quite the opposite.
In the belief that Jordan Danks, Kyle Russell, and Preston Clark are the face of Texas baseball, one might have to think otherwise with these three players being outplayed to date by so many new faces. Typically, as a baseball season rolls on, leaders tend to emerge and the better players step up their game to a higher level. While Danks is quietly putting together a good season, Russell and Clark are struggling to find a rhythm at the plate batting .255 and .267, respectively, with only two home runs combined. So, does Texas have any leaders this year? If so, it’s been difficult to pick them out.
In an odd turn of events, the young and mostly inexperienced players have held the team together to this point. Freshman catcher Cameron Rupp has come to life, leading the Horns with a .423 batting average and three home runs. He single-handedly beat Kansas in the first game of this past weekend’s series with two home runs and five runs batted in.
In addition to Rupp, Brandon Belt has been a bright spot for the Horns all season batting .386 and leading the team with 25 runs batted in. David Hernandez has performed surprisingly well at the plate, though he needs to improve on his fielding. Hernandez has already committed seven errors in the first 17 games.
Texas is going to need these young guys to keep playing well and improve defensively to make a push in the Big 12. Currently the Horns record is 12 wins, five loses (overall) and two wins, one loss in conference play. If Russell can get anywhere close to his form of a year ago, and with the younger guys continuing to play well, Texas has as good a chance as any team to win the Big 12 and go on to the College World Series.
I just wonder if Augie Garrido has the right combination of players and leaders to make that happen.
